Grafton established in 1735, grafton was originally occupied by the nipmucs, who called the area hassanamisco (place of small stones). In 1724, 40 proprietors petitioned the general court to purchase 7,500 acres of land from the tribe and were granted the right, with the money to be held in an account to benefit the nipmucs.
